Project Kaxås was launched in 2019 by Danir to reverse depopulation in the small village of Kaxås in Offerdal. Over six years, the population has grown from fewer than 100 to 270 through new housing, property allocation, and community development. As a result, more than 80 children have moved into the village. The local school has been saved from closure, and a newly built preschool opened in 2024. The project has given young families from across Sweden and parts of Europe the opportunity to establish new homes here, transforming Kaxås into a thriving community for future generations.

Organic growth through the right conditions

Project Kaxås is a clear example of how organic growth can emerge when the right conditions are in place. Over the five years of the project, the village population increased by 160 percent. The initiative resulted in 30 newly built houses, 29 of which are in the Eco-village Ladriket, while around 20 existing homes gained new young owners. This has laid the foundation for continued natural settlement.

In 2024, twelve children were born in Kaxås, representing a birth rate four to five times higher than the national average. This growth has been supported by the project’s clear focus on young couples and families.

The expansion has also led to Kaxås being officially classified as an urban area by Statistics Sweden (SCB), along with rising property values and a growing demand for local services. The higher number of children also necessitated the construction of a new preschool, which opened in 2024. As the village centre grows, new safe traffic solutions have also been implemented.

For Project Kaxås, organic growth means sustainability and long-term anchoring – what has been built is designed to last.

2025 in brief

2025 has been marked by continued inward migration to the school’s catchment area. Some of the newly built houses have already changed hands, and more families with children have moved in. This is a positive sign of a functioning secondary housing market and strong, ongoing demand for homes. The new preschool is now fully operational, and renovation work on the school has begun. Additional outcomes of the project include the establishment of new businesses.

Thanks to this growth, Kaxås was officially recognised as an urban area this year. Interest in the area and the school’s catchment remains high, and property values in Offerdal continue to rise. We take pride in seeing the community continue to grow – both through new arrivals and newborn children. The foundation has been laid for further development, and Kaxås faces a bright future thanks to this initiative.

Organic growth, a strategy that strengthens culture and value.
