The folk music group Offerdals Spelmanslag was formed for a local heritage festival in Ede, Offerdal, in western Jämtland during the summer of 1985. Olle Simonsson, a prominent and enthusiastic fiddler, put up notices in local shops asking for musicians in the area who wanted to perform at the festival. The playing continued, and the group grew. So far, we have recorded eight albums and played in the USA, Russia, and South Africa. We are happy to play at events such as dances, at care homes, and at folk music gatherings.

The next generation of folk musicians

To our delight, young people are now finding their way into our group. Some of our members work as music teachers at the local music and arts school, which has opened doors to many rewarding connections. Thanks to them, we have had several opportunities to play alongside students, and more collaborations are in the works. We have also had the joy of performing together and laying a foundation for the future. Interest is spreading too: siblings and friends of the young musicians are also curious, boosting hopes for the group’s long-term growth.

2025 in brief

Much of this year’s activities have centred on celebrating the group’s 40th anniversary. Offerdal’s local heritage association marked the occasion with a memorable evening at the heritage centre in Ede. After months of preparation, the result was a greatly appreciated festive gathering, filled with music and stories from the group’s journey so far.

The summer brought a full calendar of performances, both in Offerdal and neighbouring communities, as well as across the Swedish–Norwegian border. One especially cherished memory is our appearance at the summer pasture, Myhrbodarna, during the County Administrative Board’s “Fäbod Week.”

Organic growth, a strategy that strengthens culture and value.
