Uppstart Malmö

The sounding board building Malmö's businesses.

The idea is simple – more people in employment lead to a better Malmö. Based on the conviction that entrepreneurship can reduce segregation and social exclusion, Uppstart Malmö was founded in 2011 by Dan Olofsson and Luciano Astudillo. Uppstart Malmö is run as a non-profit foundation and has strong support and engagement from private investors, partners, the City of Malmö, and the business community. So far, the foundation’s activities and collaborations have helped over 3,800 people find new jobs.

A one-stop shop for entrepreneurs

The foundation runs two initiatives, Tillväxt Malmö and Level Malmö, both aimed at creating more job opportunities. Level Malmö targets entrepreneurs, particularly those of foreign origin, who want to start a business, while Tillväxt Malmö offers business development for Malmö companies which are already established but looking to grow further.

Since the start of the year, both initiatives have been based at the Mobilia shopping centre in Malmö, providing a “one-stop shop” for the city’s entrepreneurs, where all support is free of charge. At the core of the operations is individual business development. Additionally, seminars and various events are offered to inspire, share knowledge, and create networking opportunities.

The year in brief

In 2024, Maxa Malmö, the Malmö version of Dragons’ Den, was held for the ninth year in a row. Twelve companies took the opportunity to present themselves to eight well-known investors. During an intense afternoon, with a wide and exciting range of participating companies, new contacts were established that will hopefully lead to new collaborations and accelerated growth.

We also awarded this year’s “Growth Entrepreneur of the Year”. This award is given to one or more people who, through their entrepreneurship, have contributed to the growth of a company or organisation. All sectors are eligible; what matters is the quality of entrepreneurship and the ability to drive growth.

Following a successful first year, the mentoring programme for young people from Möllan Basement was expanded to include mentors from business networks. The programme culminated in the Malmö Youth Gala, where the city’s youth and business community came together. We are pleased to see a promising new generation of young entrepreneurs, which bodes well for Malmö’s continued growth and the creation of new job opportunities.
