Kaunis Iron

The new generation of mining.

Kaunis Iron has been operating the iron ore mine in Pajala since 2018. In our world-class facilities, we produce around 2.2 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate annually, with significant quality and environmental advantages.

Our ambition is to build a long-term and sustainable mining industry that creates value for the local community. For us, this means a mining industry rooted in the local community, creating value for Norrbotten and contributing to Pajala's development, while also strengthening its global market position.

Kaunis Iron 2.0 creates long-term sustainability

We aim to invest in the new generation of mining and develop an industry for future generations in Tornedalen. Through our Kaunis Iron 2.0 project, we want to create long-term sustainability, securing our company and the jobs we provide for many years to come. We plan to invest just over 2 billion SEK, divided across three main areas: a flotation plant, expansion of the tailings facility, and the establishment of new open-pit mines.

Our vision is ambitious – to become the world’s best mine. This requires constant decision-making that considers all sustainability perspectives: social, ecological, and economic. We have dedicated employees who share our values, and together we are finding the path forward.

By realising our strategic plan to deliver “the world’s most sustainable iron ore,” we can also play a significant role in the green industrial transition. Sweden is a global leader in sustainability issues, and these concerns are becoming increasingly important to our international customers. We will continue to drive innovative development to strengthen our position.

The year in brief

The first quarter was marked by challenges due to stoppages on the Malmbanan railway after LKAB’s train derailments in December and February. While the stoppages did not affect overall production, the focus since the railway reopened in early March has been on catching up with planned deliveries.

The year has also been characterised by pressure on iron ore prices. The global situation remains uncertain, and the developments in China, which largely influence the iron ore price, are still unclear. These are conditions to which we have, unfortunately, had to adapt.

However, looking further ahead, the outlook is brighter. Given the transformation the steel industry is undergoing, commodities are expected to enter a strong period, especially high-grade iron ore. We are well-positioned as one of the few European producers, with unique opportunities to supply a climate-smart and locally produced raw material.
